The Bridge
After four teaser clips emphasizing a spooky atmosphere in short bursts. FX has released an actual trailer for the border-straddling mystery series for The Bridge, which premieres this July. From the looks of it, this series will fit in just fine next to Justified, Sons Of Anarchy, and The Americans in look and tone. Diane Kruger plays an American detective who teams up with Chihuahua state police detective played by Oscar-nominee Demián Bichir to investigate a string of grisly murders on both sides of the US-Mexico border. Kruger’s character seems ported over from another series from co-creator Meredith Stiehm—Cold Case—but pairing her with Bichir could bring out the best in her, more Inglorious Basterds than National Treasure. The trailer has a definite Breaking Bad-meets-The Killing vibe with dashes of Hannibal—and a glimpse of Matthew Lillard—but with the southwestern setting and drug cartel violence, hopefully it leans more toward the former and avoids the pitfalls of the latter. The summer television slate feels a bit overloaded with gruesome murder investigations, but this one shows some dramatic promise.
