The Canyons

“When’s the last time you went to see a movie…that you really thought meant something to you? I don’t know, maybe it’s just not my thing anymore,” Lindsay Lohan says in this trailer to The Canyons, shortly before illustrating her point by starring in scenes from The Canyons. By now, the Paul Schrader-directed, Bret Easton Ellis-written film has become infamous for tales of Lohan behaving behind-the-scenes exactly as one would expect, coupled with rejections by Sundance and SXSW for its alleged “ugliness and deadness”—all aspersions this preview seems intent on transforming into selling points. The opening shots of decaying movie theaters certainly establishes a thesis that cinema is an increasingly hollow and forgotten art form; the subsequent shots of Lohan and porn star James Deen having vacant-eyed sex under coldly neon lights reaffirm it. The trailer ends by encouraging you to watch the film “in the privacy of your own home,” hoping that you, like Lohan, are totally over both theaters and movies that, like, mean something.
