The Fall Guy broke Casino Royale’s record for flipping a car around

Flipping a car seven times isn't cool. You know what's cool? Flipping a car eight times.

A ways into Casino Royale, after James Bond has won the poker game and discovered that the bad guys are sore losers, he furiously chases after Le Chiffre in his Aston Martin and has to swerve to avoid running over Eva Green. In a somewhat over-the-top stunt that feels out of place in the otherwise realistic film (or at least relatively realistic, given the rest of the franchise), Bond’s car flips through the air seven times before coming to a stop. The stunt held the Guinness World Record for car-rolling for nearly 20 years, but it has now been beaten by director David Leitch’s The Fall Guy.

The movie, which stars Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt, is partially a tribute to the often unrecognized work of stunt performers in Hollywood (from Leitch, who is a former stunt performer), so it’s only appropriate that the movie would have some big-ass stunts. The car-rolling in The Fall Guy was performed by driver Logan Holladay, and as shown in a teaser video for the movie, he managed to hold on for eight and a half “cannon rolls” (that’s what they’re really called) before the car stopped.

Plus, as a fun gag, Entertainment Weekly says that Gosling explained at a Fall Guy screening this week that Holladay makes a cameo in the movie as the guy strapping Gosling’s stunt performer character into the car before it does those flips, and then the’s also the guy who pulls Gosling’s character out of the car, even though he’s the one who actually did it. Movie magic! And it’s a thematically relevant little gag, because the movie is about stunt performers!

Now, a Guinness World Record is nice and all, but could we get an actual Oscar for stunt performers at some point?
