The Leftovers’ Nicole Kassell to direct HBO’s Watchmen pilot
There will be a mini-Leftovers reunion on the set of HBO’s Watchmen series—according to The Hollywood Reporter, Nicole Kassell will direct the pilot episode of Damon Lindelof’s adaptation. She will also executive produce the series, which has no start or release date yet, along with Lindelof’s WBTV-based White Rabbit company.
Kassell’s expansive body of work includes episodes of The Americans, Rectify, Claws, and American Crime, in addition to her feature-length debut, The Woodsman. She helmed two episodes of The Leftovers that marked series highs: season two’s “No Room At The Inn” and season three’s “It’s A Matt, Matt, Matt, Matt World.” Kassell and Lindelof have proven to be great collaborators, which bodes well for the latest reimagining of Alan Moore’s graphic novel (the TV series can really only improve on Zack Snyder’s airless adaptation). There’s no word on casting yet, but Patrick Wilson has thrown his cowl in the ring to return as Nite Owl II.
