The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel combines Gilmore Girls with Mad Men in new trailer

Amy Sherman-Palladino and her husband Daniel are most famous for creating the long-running beloved dramedy Gilmore Girls, but their follow-up series haven’t been as fortunate. Bunheads was cut off too quickly after only a season, while dreadful sitcom The Return Of Jezebel James likely shouldn’t have been created in the first place (and a pilot called The Wyoming Story never even made it to air).

Now in a long-term development deal with Amazon, the Palladinos’ latest series is The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. It’s a tremendously stylized piece, Mad Men-style, about an early ’60s Manhattan housewife, who decides to become a stand-up comedian after her marriage falls apart. From the trailer, the series offers a colorful, romanticized view of beatnik-era New York, and the Palladinos’ knack for picking out humorous brunette leading ladies holds up, as Rachel Brosnahan holds a considerable amount of charm as the brash title character (who also gets to swear, a first for the Palladinos). Looks like third time may be the charm for the Palladinos’ post-Gilmore life, but we’ll reserve final judgement until the series premieres on Amazon on Wednesday, November 29.
