The Nazis hit close to home in the debut trailer for Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus

As expected, Bethesda capped off its E3 showcase last night with a lengthy debut trailer for the next Wolfenstein game, the sequel to 2014’s shockingly good Wolfenstein: The New Order. Titled Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus, seemingly retconning the 2009 reboot that The New Order was supposed to follow-up on, it continues the story of stalwart Nazi fighter BJ Blazkowicz in an alternate 1960s where the Nazis have conquered the globe. This time, he’s back in America and trying to rally resistance leaders around the country to fight back against their German oppressors.

Given how long it typically takes to create a game of this scope, it’s probable that the developers at MachineGames didn’t realize just how close to home their story would hit when they started laying it out. But the nearly 10-minute trailer makes The New Colossus look weirder and certainly more relevant than Wolfenstein has ever been. BJ, an expectant father who refuses to raise his kids “in a world run by these Nazi assholes,” has to travel to the country’s devastated cities and assemble a multi-ethnic team of freedom fighters to lead “a second American revolution” against the Nazis and their American allies. (Note the KKK members buddying up to a Nazi soldier on an idyllic suburban downtown street.) Also, a guy drops acid and talks to a cartoon chameleon, you know, because it’s the ’60s and you’ve got to introduce at least a little non-violent levity to all this Nazi killing.

Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus is set for release on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on October 27.
