The Pod Save America podcast is heading to HBO
We’ve covered Crooked Media’s Pod Save America in the past; put together by a team of former Obama White House staffers, the show offers a passionate, “no bullshit” look at the American political landscape and its various bombed-out hovels. (Also, our favorite passive-aggressive attempts to read all the mandatory podcast ad-copy we all have to constantly choke down.) Now, the show has been tapped to get the TV series treatment from HBO, with the network reporting today that it’s recruiting hosts Jon Favreau (not that one), Dan Pfeiffer, Tommy Vietor, and Jon Lovett—a former writer for The Newsroom—to transform the show into a series of TV specials.
This isn’t the first time HBO has taken the leap to adapt a podcast for TV. The network broke ground on the concept when it created an animated version of podcast forerunner The Ricky Gervais Show, back in 2010, and recently tapped Phoebe Robinson and Jessica Williams to adapt their 2 Dope Queens into a series of specials airing this month.
Pod Save America’s hosting team issued a statement of gratitude to HBO today, thanking the network for taking a chance on them despite the fact that “these live shows will have so few dragons and sex robots.”
