The superheroes have a new reason to fight in this trailer for Injustice 2

At this point, it’s pretty well-established that all superheroes will eventually fight each other. Sometimes, the reasons for the fisticuffs are a little thin and contrived, and sometimes—like in the video game Injustice: Gods Among Us—they’re so complex that they actually work better than they have any right to. For those who missed out on the 2013 fighting game, it involved an alternate universe where Superman murdered the Joker and became a fascist dictator, with some heroes joining him and others (specifically Batman) resisting his regime. Then, some characters from the “proper” universe jumped over to help the good guys beat Superman, which they eventually did.

Now, Injustice developer NetherRealm Studios is back with a sequel, and it has just released a new story trailer that teases some of the new reasons the heroes are going to be punching each other this time around. It looks like classic Superman villain Braniac is going to be pulling the strings, but beyond that, all we know is that the heroes and villains could be teaming up with different people than they did last time, which means the story might not be as straightforward as simply stopping an evil Superman.

Injustice 2—which recently made our list of “Most Anticipated Games”—will be available on May 16, 2017.
