Tom Felton to play adult Draco Malfoy in Broadway's Cursed Child

It’s certainly not unheard of these days for an actor to revisit the role that made them famous, even many years later; it’s just that revisiting Harry Potter is complicated, what with the upcoming reboot cleaning the slate and author J.K. Rowling’s way-too-online transphobic crusade. The old HP crowd is divided between those distancing themselves from the franchise (for political reasons or just to get professional distance from their child-acting days) and those still relying on it for relevancy. Tom Felton appears to be firmly in the latter category, as Variety reports that he’ll reprise his role as Draco Malfoy in the Broadway play Harry Potter And The Cursed Child

Felton, the first member of the original HP film cast to also star in Harry Potter And The Cursed Child, will make his Broadway debut on November 11 for a 19-week engagement through March 22, 2026. “Being a part of the Harry Potter films has been one of the greatest honors of my life,” the actor said in a statement (via Variety). “Joining this production will be a full-circle moment for me, because when I begin performances in Cursed Child this fall, I’ll also be the exact age Draco is in the play. It’s surreal to be stepping back into his shoes—and of course his iconic platinum blond hair—and I am thrilled to be able to see his story through and to share it with the greatest fan community in the world. I look forward to joining this incredible company and being a part of the Broadway community.”

The Tony- and Olivier-award winning Harry Potter And The Cursed Child was written by Jack Thorne (Adolescence) from a story by Thorne, Rowling, and John Tiffany. Set 19 years after Harry’s final battle with Voldemort and shortly after the epilogue of Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows, it follows Harry’s son Albus Severus as he goes to Hogwarts, is sorted into Slytherin, and befriends Draco’s son Scorpius. As the young students become embroiled in a time-travel plot that could resurrect Voldemort, Harry and Draco have to set aside their differences to save their sons.

In his post-Potter years, Felton has continued to work on both stage and screen, notably appearing in Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes and CW’s The Flash. Unlike some of his co-stars who denounced Rowling’s transphobia, Felton has had kind words for the author, telling The Times in 2022 that “no one has single-handedly done more for bringing joy to so many different generations and walks of life. I’m constantly reminded of her positive work in that field and as a person. I’ve only had a handful of meetings with her but she has always been lovely. So I’m very grateful for that.” (Of his own views, he said, “I’m pro. I’m pro choice. I’m pro life. I’m pro discussion. I’m pro love. I don’t tend to pick sides.”) Speaking with Entertainment Weekly about the upcoming Harry Potter television series on HBO, he said that “we’re all very excited to see the wizarding world continue” and he looks “forward to knocking on young Draco’s door and surprising him, or something like that.” He added, “I’ll definitely be sneaking into a background shot as an extra.”
