TV favorite Laurie Metcalf's coming to Supergirl

It’s been a real bummer of a news day (or week, or month, or year, insert as appropriate), so we cling to the good stuff when we can. Like, say, learning, courtesy of TVLine, that Laurie Metcalf—who’s been a consistent series highlight for 30 years now, on everything from Roseanne, to Desperate Housewives, to The Big Bang Theory—will be showing up in National City soon for a guest star stint on Supergirl.

Metcalf will play the mother of Jeremy Jordan’s character, tech genius Winn Schott (and thus, presumably, the ex-wife of the villainous Toyman). We’re not sure why, specifically, Metcalf’s career has suddenly pivoted so hard into a “Mother of improbably intelligent people with occasional socialization issues” niche, but if it keeps her on our TVs, we’ll take it. (In this case, apparently, her initial motivation for taking the role was that her youngest kid really wanted to meet Melissa Benoist.) The three-time Emmy-winner’s episode will air some time in 2018.
