Twilight Of The Gods finally has a premiere date

The Norse Gods saw the growing hype around Paul Mescal’s Gladiator movie, upcoming Jeff-Goldblum-as-Zeus series Kaos, and season two of Percy Jackson And The Olympians, and said, “Hold my drinking horn.” Well, after 2000 years of burning and pillaging (and one anachronistic Chris Hemsworth representation), Odin, Thor, and the rest of the gang are finally getting their day in the streaming sun.

Netflix announced Zach Snyder’s Twilight Of The Gods all the way back in 2021, but the Rebel Moon director famously doesn’t do anything if it isn’t really, really long. Ergo, the streamer just announced the animated series’ premiere date today, three whole years later. That’s okay, though—Valhalla has been waiting for centuries. What’s a few years more? Twilight Of The Gods officially premieres September 19.

Billed by Netflix as “an all-new daring and spectacular animated vision of Norse mythology,” the official synopsis of Twilight Of The Gods reads as follows: “In a mythical world of great battles, great deeds and great despair, Leif, a mortal King, is saved on the battlefield by Sigrid, an iron-willed warrior with whom he falls in love. On their wedding night, Sigrid and Leif survive a wrath of terror from Thor, which sets them—and a crew of crusaders—on an against all odds and merciless mission for vengeance. This heroic story of love, loss and revenge, is a journey to Hell and beyond… across fantastical lands, battlefields fierce and bloody, and wars waged against Gods and demons.”

The streamer also released a bloody first look at the series today, which recalls the art style of classics like Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend Of Korra. “The evolution is similar to how I evolve a live-action scene,” Snyder, who previously directed animated feature Legend Of The Guardians: The Owls Of Ga’Hoole, said of working in the medium (via The Hollywood Reporter). “It’s an amazingly pure brain-to-animation process. It’s incredibly rewarding.”

The series was also co-created by Jay Oliva and Eric Carrasco. It features vocal talent from Sylvia Hoeks as Sigrid, Stuart Martin as Leif, Rahul Kohli as Egill, Paterson Joseph as Loki, Jamie Clayton as Seid-Kona, Pilou Asbæk as Thor, Birgitte Hjort Sørensen as Hervor, Kristofer Hivju as Andvari, Thea Sofie Loch Næss as Thyra, John Noble as Odin, and Peter Stormare as Ulfr.
