Vince Staples would gladly come back to Abbott Elementary
Staples, who just premiered his own show on Netflix, also praised Quinta Brunson's leadership in an interview with The A.V. Club
Vince Staples—“Norf Norf” rapper and newly-minted Netflix creator—is a multi-hyphenate in every sense of the word. Still, even with his unbelievably full plate, The Vince Staples Show creator misses his humble, fictional job: Philadelphia-based UPS employee. “I would love to bring Maurice back to Abbott Elementary,” Staples said of his short time starring opposite Quinta Brunson’s Janine and making trouble for the show’s main pairing in a recent interview with The A.V. Club. “Being the mailman is important to the school ecosystem and to a city’s ecosystem, so I feel like Maurice is still on Abbott. Every time you see a package, every time something gets delivered, it’s the ghost of Maurice walking through the halls of Abbott Elementary School.”
Even though Staples’ character was pretty bitter towards Janine the last time she saw him—she did cheat on him with his best friend and then bring that friend along to his favorite restaurant to break up with him—behind the scenes, he has nothing but love for Brunson and what she’s created. “Hopefully one day I might be able to be brought back for a small cameo, but I’m just so appreciative of the opportunity Quinta gave me and also the knowledge she gave me on how to orchestrate a show, run a set, and be a real producer, actor, and writer,” Staples shared. “I just love her to death. She’s like my family, so I just really appreciate being there, even if it was one episode or however many episodes I end up having or would have had. It was a great experience.”
As he delves deeper into his behind-the-camera career with The Vince Staples Show, the rapper is also turning to Brunson for inspiration on how to run his own sets in the future. What surprised him the most, he said, was her capacity to run a fun and relaxed set despite the “weight on [her] shoulders to create a show that means that much to so many people.” “Everyone there was extremely motivated and extremely professional, but they still had fun,” he explained. “It really taught me a lot about leadership and how to make people feel warm and welcome.”
You can look out for the ghost of Maurice on Abbott Elementary season 3, premiering every Wednesday on ABC and Hulu. The Vince Staples Show is now streaming on Netflix.
