The Electronic Entertainment Expo has descended once again upon Los Angeles, deluging gaming sites with images of awkward Microsoft speakers in ill-fitting leather jackets, and the enigmatic-but-alluring promise/order/threat to “Play as Prompto.” It’s also brought a ton of new games for us all to fantasize about, alongside images of a naked, oily Norman Reedus, and the sight of our own stalwart editor, Matt Gerardi, captured by Moblins.
But while The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild is capturing a lot of attention (and game journalists) this year, with its attempts to break the Zelda series away from its usual linearity and into a more open world, it’s not the game I wish I was sitting down to play tomorrow night. (I like my Zelda games weird, and I’m not yet convinced that Breath Of The Wild will reach Majora’s Mask or Wind Waker levels of Hyrule oddballness.)
No, I’m itching to get my hands on We Happy Few, the sole real highlight in Microsoft’s mostly moribund Monday press conference. Set in a world where happiness is mandatory (and comes in the form of a pill), We Happy Few’s trailer was a rare spark of originality in a show that’s become more and more dominated by franchises and easy sequels. First-person stealth is a hard sell for me—God knows I’ve bounced off of Sir, You Are Being Hunted enough times to prove that to myself—but the idea of ducking through a ruined town, dosing myself to fit in with the permanently smiling crowd, and watching the environment alter and warp based on how much of the drug was in my system, is irresistibly cool. Even more than that, I’m a novelty junkie, and We Happy Few feels like one of the only fresh ideas to come out of this year’s E3. I can’t wait to see how it actually plays.
