Zoe Saldaña hopes there's a future for Guardians Of The Galaxy
Saldaña has previously said that she's done playing Gamora, but hopes another actress can reincarnate her one day
In many ways, Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3 felt like a real swan song for the beloved series—an increasing rarity in the MCU. In his review of the 2023 film for The A.V. Club, Matthew Jackson wrote that the movie “carries with it the weight not just of the six years it took to get it made, but of a certain sense of finality in a fictional universe that’s seriously lacking in endings… yet here’s Gunn and his cast, doing their best to create some kind of satisfying conclusion to a story they started nearly a decade ago.” With a little help from Florence + The Machine, they pulled it off.
Despite all this, Zoe Saldaña hopes the franchise could return one day. “I would think it would be a huge loss for Marvel if they didn’t find a way to bring back the Guardians of the Galaxy,” she says on an upcoming episode of The Playlist’s “Discourse” podcast. “It’s just such a fan-favorite group of misfits, you know? And then at the helm, they had a voice like James Gunn’s writing—which is just so marvelous for and very specific for this genre. And it’s so great for this genre as well. So, I would be the first one in the first row to sort of celebrate when the Guardians of the Galaxy come back.”
If Marvel stays true to its recent patterns, Saldaña might just get her wish. Still, she insists she won’t be one donning the green makeup this time. “I mean, so far, I think that she is [gone for good] for me, but I don’t think Gamora has gone for good,” she said of her extraterrestrial character.
Last year, the actor also suggested to Total Film Magazine that she’d be happy to see a new face take on the role. “She’s been such an impactful character for fans, and especially female fans, and young female fans,” Saldaña said. “I would love for Marvel to figure out a way to find that next generation of actors that can incarnate these characters, and give them this immortality that fans generationally keep coming back to.”
